Guinea 1985

MV Truman in Estepona.JPG

Photos during my stay in Guinea as a captain on the ferryboat "Truman". We were based in Malabo on the Muelle Viejo and we used the old Navy shed as our office for ticket sales and to store goods in transit or for importation. In Bata we have build a new docking facillity in the old port and kept an office in town. The trips to Douala became very populair with the local tradesmen because this was a new opportunity to buy products that were needed in Guinea. At one occasion we made a trip paid by the American Embassy to Annobon with rice and goods needed especially for the schoolchildren. We have moved the Army to and from Bata and we made an exploration trip with Thierry Roussel and the Governement to Kogo.
Eventualy the cost of the ferry service were higher than the earnings and we moved back to Europe.

"Truman"in Estepona on her way to Malabo384 viewsThe Truman an ex-Norwegian ferryboat was chartered for regular ferry services in Guinea between Malabo- Bata and Malabo-Douala in 1985. We carried 500 ton cargo and 250 passengers. In Bata we created a new docking facillity in the puerto viejo and a ticket office. In Malabo we used the Navy shed and the muelle viejo.
The Douala run brought very needed provisions to the island. The Bata run was shared with an oversized Chinese passengerboat who took passengers for free. Our service improved clearly the availabillity of goods on the island but stopped due too very high running costs !
